Dualachas Chroitearachd Cairt-Chluiche | Cultural Crofting Playing Cards is an ATLAS Arts commission and the development of a project that began in 2014 as part of an artistic residency with Skye-based ATLAS ARTS in North Uist. The project called ‘Life on the Land’ explored the unique heritage and culture of crofting. Part of the output was a bespoke set of Gaelic crofting flash cards that reflected both the skills of the group and those of the wider crofting community, characterising through symbols, texture and pattern the interconnectivity of crofting, our culture and landscape. In 2016 ATLAS commissioned me to develop these into a pack of playing cards and a series of children’s card games that function as a fun, Gaelic educational tool and also to increase awareness of crofting. In 2017 these cards were distributed to schools and pupils throughout the Outer Hebrides.
